MD5 Hash:

What is MD5?

MD5 is a cryptographic hash function that produces a 128-bit (32-character hex) fingerprint of any input. The same input always produces the same hash. Different inputs almost never produce the same hash.

What is it used for?

  • Checksums: Verify file integrity (downloads, backups)
  • Cache keys: Short unique identifiers for content
  • Gravatar: Email hashes for avatar URLs
  • Legacy systems: Older systems still use MD5

Security note

MD5 is not secure for passwords or security-critical use. It has known collisions. Use SHA-256 or bcrypt for passwords. For checksums and non-security use, MD5 is still common.
