Extracts the audio track from MP4 video files and saves it as MP3. Perfect for saving music from videos, creating podcast clips from video recordings, or extracting dialogue and sound effects. Uses high-quality LAME MP3 encoding.
What is it used for?
- Extracting music or audio from downloaded videos
- Converting video podcast recordings to audio-only MP3 files
- Saving dialogue or sound effects from video clips
- Creating MP3 ringtones from video content
- Reducing file size by removing the video stream
Step-by-Step Guide
- Click the upload area or drag and drop your MP4 file
- Optionally adjust audio bitrate in the settings panel
- Click 'Convert to .MP3' to start extraction
- Preview the audio result in the built-in player
- Click Download to save the MP3 file
How it works
Upload an MP4 file and click Convert. FFmpeg WASM extracts the audio stream and re-encodes it to MP3 using LAME at VBR quality 2 (~190kbps). The result can be previewed and downloaded instantly.
Tips & Best Practices
- For music, use 192kbps or higher for transparent quality
- For speech and podcasts, 128kbps provides clear audio at smaller file sizes
- The video stream is completely discarded - only audio is extracted
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MP4 to MP3 conversion lossless?
No. MP4 typically contains AAC audio, and converting to MP3 involves re-encoding. However, at the default VBR quality 2 (~190kbps), the quality difference is imperceptible to most listeners.
Why is the MP3 file so much smaller than the MP4?
Because the video stream (which makes up 90%+ of MP4 file size) is completely removed. Only the audio track is preserved.
Can I convert videos longer than 10 minutes?
Yes, but longer videos take more time to process since FFmpeg WASM runs in your browser. A 10-minute video typically converts in 15-30 seconds.
What audio quality should I choose?
The default VBR quality 2 (~190kbps) is excellent for music. For speech or podcasts, 128kbps is sufficient. For audiophile quality, use 320kbps.
Privacy & Security
This tool uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (WASM). The WASM binary (~25MB) is downloaded from a CDN on first use and cached by your browser. All file processing happens locally on your device - your files are never uploaded to any server. This makes it safe for sensitive, private, or confidential media files. Large files may take longer to process depending on your device's CPU and available memory.
